COASTAL EXPERTISE

Why does coastal experience matter for an Outer Banks renovation?

Building on the Outer Banks comes with challenges you simply don’t face everywhere else — high winds, flood zones, salt air, and materials that take a beating from the coastal environment. After years of renovating homes throughout Dare County, we know what holds up, what tends to fail, and where the details matter most. That experience helps us recommend the right materials, plan for local conditions, and build smarter from the start.

GET TO KNOW THE OWNERS

A family team on the Outer Banks.

The Renovation Company is a family team based in Kill Devil Hills, run by Matt and Jessie Hagadone. Matt is on every job. He has over 35 years of hands-on experience across framing, plumbing, and fine tile and stone work. We got our start as Outer Banks Tile and Stone, and that reputation for careful craftsmanship is still what drives most of our work: the majority of our clients come through referrals. Our crew is small and consistent, not rotating subcontractors, and we treat every home like our own.

What Our Clients Say

"We couldn’t be happier with our major renovation to our home by Matt & his team. In 2023 we purchased a home that needed a ton of work; we had interviewed 5 potential builders in early 2024 to begin work in September. Matt stood out from the rest because he understood our vision and immediately began collaborating with us to bring it life. He allowed us to fully participate in the entire project to use unique found objects for our home while ‘thriftily’ purchasing the finished pieces. Matt can help with design, structural engineering as well as exquisite craftsmanship. Every where we went to visit vendors for our project there were nothing but positive comments about Matt and his team. We also really liked seeing other works he’s done through Instagram which helped us to know he would deliver a product we would love to live in - and we absolutely do. Everyone on Matt’s team was amazing and we consider them thought partners and friends. Thank you doesn’t even begin to express the appreciation we have for Matt & the Renovation Company."

"We are so grateful to Matt & Jesse Hagadone of The Renovation Company. Matt & Jesse listened to every idea we had and if they felt that they could add any extra WOW factor, they let us know so we could decide if we wanted to add that element into our dream. I would tell Jesse what I was thinking about and it was as if she could read my mind and immediately would start shooting me text of ideas she thought would fit into what I was visualizing. They treated our home as if it were their own. Every detail was looked into and the place was always cleaned up each day before they left. They spent early mornings and late evenings working. All their employees were considerate and just as meticulous as Matt & Jesse! Words just can’t even express the gratitude we feel for them and their team. And, it isn’t just Matt & Jesse! Their children all played a part in transforming our house also. Matt’s dad custom built our beautiful built in seating and range hood. Then, when I decided I wanted floating shelves they did those also. If you are looking for a contractor to do anything around your home, you would be blessed if you got The Renovation Company to do it for you!"

"We had a fantastic experience with Matt and his team from first contact (within an hour of contacting them), to completion of our full house remodel. We were very particular about details and we never got any pushback when we asked for something to be altered or updated. Everything was completed to our high standards. I’m sure we had a lot of complicated ideas and the team tackled them happily. We were living on site the entire time and the crew kept things clean and were polite. We will definitely come back for any future work."

Common Questions

What areas of the Outer Banks do you serve?

Most of the Outer Banks, from South Nags Head and Manteo up to Northern Corolla — including Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores, Duck, Corolla, and Manteo.

Do you work on vacation rentals and second homes?

Yes. A large portion of our work is on vacation rentals, Airbnbs, and second homes for out-of-state owners. We communicate clearly with remote owners, send progress photos, and keep job sites clean between rental turnovers.

What types of renovation projects do you take on?

Anything from a single bathroom project to a full gut renovation — kitchens, bathrooms, additions, exterior siding and decking, outdoor kitchens, and whole-home reconfigurations.

Are you familiar with Outer Banks coastal building requirements?

Yes. The Outer Banks falls in North Carolina's highest wind zone, with strict requirements for hurricane straps, impact-rated windows, and flood-zone construction. We build to meet or exceed every coastal code that applies.

How long does a typical renovation take?

Most full kitchen renovations take 6 to 12 weeks once demolition starts; timelines vary by project scope, which we'll walk through during your free estimate.
